ESPRIT 空想 is an alias for George Clanton that has been running concurrently with the George Clanton & Mirror Kisses projects since 2012. Broadly speaking ESPRIT is the more vaporwave-leaning side of George Clanton. Over time, the lines have become more blurred between George Clanton and ESPRIT, and now the projects are more separated by the way they can be performed live more than anything else.
virtua.zip is the album that started to blur those lines. Released in 2014, one year before howtocopewithgrief, virtua.zip is significant in being one of the first "vaporwave" albums to be comprised of original compositions.

ESPRIT began in 2012 as the sample-based side-project of electronic pop artist “George Clanton.” ESPRIT’s first two EP’s “Girls Only” and “Summer Night” are still considered essential listening for any newcomers to the vaporwave genre. In 2014, when vaporwave was still defined by its use of found music and manipulated samples, ESPRIT released his ‘Virtua.zip’ LP composed entirely of original material. In the 3 years since its release, the vaporwave scene at large has followed this trend.
After ‘Virtua.zip,’ the ESPRIT series was put on hold while George Clanton’s eponymous project’s ‘howtocopewithgrief’ LP released in late 2015. In 2017, ESPRIT returned with both the successor to ‘Virtua.zip’ and the sister album to ‘howtocopewithgrief’.
‘200% Electronica’ combines fully original compositions in ESPRIT’s classic vaporwave style with chopped & screwed samples pulled from George Clanton’s own songs, inspired by two years of touring with nothing but a Roland SP 404-SX.

Things start to stagnate if I get comfortable with the same formula. I'm a music fiend- I love the challenge of working outside of the "vaporwave" genre i've been pigeonholed into." "Crystal Matrix" answers the tired "Is it vaporwave?" question with a resounding "who gives a shit." The "Live In LA" album was born out of Equip's monthly mixtape club and specifically crafted for the 2021 "Pudinapalooza" 2-day event curated by howtocopewithgrief's co-owner, Neggy Gemmy. It was Equip's first show post-pandemic, and the pent-up energy was palpable. Equip has spent the last two years transforming, both physically and musically. Before George Clanton, before howtocopewithgrief, there was "Mirror Kisses." Mirror Kisses was a name I held onto for many years because I was afraid if I started going by my real name, I would lose all of my fan base. Imagine that!
This album was originally released in 2013, and has been available at mirrorkisses.bandcamp.com since that date. But, I've been surprised at how many people had never heard this music. When I play something from one of the older albums live, there is always someone who asks "what song was that?"
So, if you are looking for "more music like George Clanton," this is pretty darn close.

About
Pictureplane has made his name circling the outer limits of pop culture in several mediums. The Brooklyn-based artist's gallery works, shown both in the U.S. and abroad, collide familiar with fringe and hard lines with visceral spatter. His Alien Body clothing line serves up a stylized study of symbology, the occult, and societal decay. And his music—beautiful yet heavy, swirling wild strains of industrial dance, gothic hip-hop, and emotive New Age—treats electronics not as artificial, but as extensions of our analog selves. After a decade thrashing the status quo, Egedy is not only kin to makers of lovely dark music everywhere, but a vital player in the global DIY community. He is a proud outsider, yes, but his tribe is legion and ever-growing.
In 2011, Pictureplane's Thee Physical arrived, marking a major leap forward. Egedy's voice was suddenly dripping sex at the forefront of a lush synthscape, while cuts like "Trancegender" and "Breath Work" explored the human body with gender-dissolving aplomb. He moved to Brooklyn in 2012 in order to stoke alt-rave culture from a more powerful vantage before teaming up with fabled indie-rap imprint Anticon for Technomancer (2015), an LP about the blurring line between ourselves and our machines. Along the way, Egedy's toured with everyone from Crystal Castles and Major Lazer to the Faint and Gang of Four. He has remixed Lil B; been remixed by Grimes; collaborated with bands (Prayers) and SoundCloud stars (Goth Boi Clique)
